One of the most effective business strategies today is the same as 50 years ago: networking. The more people that you know, the more reach that you have in your profession. Though the importance of networking has not changed over the years, the ways in which we network has changed drastically. Now, networking happens online and on social media more than in person. If you’re not networking online, then you’re missing out on a great opportunity to grow professionally. Networking is a form of (self) digital marketing and is crucial to any serious freelancer.

When it comes to being a professional translator, this is especially important. Working in a niche market means that you will be interacting within a lot of the same circles throughout your career, whether you are brand new to the industry or a seasoned veteran. Here are four easy ways to market yourself online as a freelance translator.

1. Have your own website

With the advent of technology and the ease with which even the most computer-illiterate people can make websites, there is no excuse not to have one. A personal website is a great way to showcase your previous work much in the same way a traditional resume might do. It is also an easy way to quickly communicate to others what your personal style is, which helps make you more human than, say, an online application.

That being said, always keep it professional. Proof read your page two or three times to ensure that you haven’t made any mistakes that could cost you a gig. If you’re not sure where to start building your website, check for the best website building platforms that exist today.

2. Industry Profiles

Another easy way to network within your industry is by joining your industry’s portals, such as Proz.com or CIOL. This not only increases your visibility, but it also allows translation agencies to contact you about jobs that you may be qualified for. It’s a great way to always stay abreast of all the latest industry jobs and leads.

3. Social Media Platforms

Social media is no longer just for personal use. In fact, much of the world relies on social media for business interactions today. Just like having your own website can quickly communicate your qualifications and personal style, social media can take it a step further and humanize you. The key to increasing your visibility is by engaging with your community relentlessly so that you become an unofficial authority within your community. The easiest way to boost your engagement is to build your Instagram followers through an automation platform. This way, you are increasing your visibility without expending too much energy.

4. Publish Your Own Content

Though you probably already have your hands full with translation gigs, it is always helpful to have your own array of online articles via a personal blog or contributor status. This allows potential clients to see your own writing style and capabilities that would otherwise go unnoticed in a translation service. You can easily add a blog tab to your website or you can regularly post to a free community platform, such as Medium.

Marketing yourself online is a crucial part of being a freelancer. It allows you to search for jobs more efficiently and display your qualifications more easily. What are some other digital marketing tips that you have as a freelancer? Let us know in the comments!
